Been interesting times folks! Just solo bikepacked 1150km across Trans Labrador Highway – a remote road through the heart of the Big Land’s vast wilderness. Camped all the way in grimy wet, snowy, damp freeze ya to the bone spring weather. Grimier than me even. My outfit was what you see in the picture: a mountain bike I decked out with some grocery crates, snowshoes and the pack on my back. About 70lbs of gear. Averaged 100km a day when conditions were sensible. Often went well over an hour without seeing a vehicle.
There’s a longer grind of a story to it. But in brief, spring struck hard, my river-roadway for toboggan burst open and being too restless to wait a month for lakes to iceout enough for canoe, I adapted. Peddling in-between seasons kept momentum going & the expedition close on schedule. Goal is to finish in 12 months (July 6th). And instead of leaving near Churchill Falls, where I began the last winter snowshoe section in mid-March, I rewinded a few hundred km back to Lab City and came full length of the Trans Lab. With time to burn as the bush thawed, why not? The rest I will share when the expedition ends.
The welcome sign is the southern border of Labrador and, for me, a goodbye sign. After 311 days in Quebec and Labrador covering 3002km by canoe, snowshoe, and bike, I have finally crossed over to Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula. Now, the journey’s last leg awaits.
Saku returns, and I swap pedals for backpacking gear to trek the length of Newfoundlands majestic & merciless Great Northern Peninsula woods. Roughly 300km. Glad to have Sak back in the lineup! More updates to come. Near 1000km remains to the goal.
